Lara Boyle set up Beauty & the Bib with her husband Kieran in 2004 after they both decided to quit their careers as teachers.
She began by designing bibs at her kitchen table. As a mother of four children, she knew a little about baby products. She hit on the idea of developing a range of bibs that were both practical, and beautiful. Her first designs featured strawberries, hearts and stars.
Once she had found a manufacturer, she set up a web site, found herself an accountant and rented a stall at weekends at Greenwich Market in south London.
Before long, she was receiving orders from independent babywear shops across the UK and also the general public. She had to install a large garden shed in her back garden to keep up with demand.
In 2005 Harrods placed an order and also included her products as part of their Best of British promotion. She also began supplying other high street stores, including Harvey Nicholls and Daisy and Tom.
After exhibiting at a number of trade fairs in Europe, including Pitti Immagine Bimbo in Florence, orders soon started coming in from as far a field as Australia, Lebanon and USA.
At Pitti she met Ludovica Dodero. She appointed her company Nonsolatte as exclusive distributors for Italy. Since then, Beauty & the Bibís Italian sales have soared.
In 2007, to cope with increasing demand for her products, Lara moved Beauty & the Bib from her south London home to a warehouse.
Her range of bibs now includes organic, laminated, for children with special needs, embroidered and, most recently, vintage-inspired.
The overseas market is proving very lucrative for Beauty & the Bib. Lara now has distributors in a number of countries, including Italy, Japan and the Netherlands.
